The Weight, 2016

To make The Weight, Kyungwoo Chun went to meet students in the special class organized at thenearby Romain Rolland school for non-Francophone students who arrived
onlyrecently in France, and who come from highly diverse backgrounds. They are given intensive French courses for a year before attending the regular classes.

The artist asked the students to form teams in order to carry each other as long as they can. What interested him in this portrait is the emotional resonance created by this
suspended, sustained moment. The very action of carrying a person on one's back, of supporting each other both physically and psychologically, fosters a spirit of mutual
assistance. The artist played with the traditional norms of photography by making portraits that were poetically blurred by the prolonged exposure time. The softness of the
images reflects the emotional intensity felt by the students in these situations of sharing. The language of the body takes the place of speech and shows the fragile equilibrium
of several bodies interacting, breaking down cultural and linguistic barriers. For what interests Kyungwoo Chun is each teenager's relation to his or her own body, as inflected
by cultural background and age.

The project was realized during the residency programme at Musee MAC VAL in Val-de-Marne in France in 2015-2016.
